What it is

Competitors in AI search are not always the same brands you list in a deck. They're the brands that AI engines actually surface when a buyer asks for an answer in your category — including brands you may not consider direct competition. This view shows who they are, how often they appear, and why.

Why it matters for AI search

AI recommendations are zero-sum at the answer level. When a model picks three brands to mention, every position you don't hold is held by someone else. Knowing which brands win, on which prompts, and from which sources is the fastest way to plan how to displace them.

The shift

"The competitor that matters most is often the one you never tracked."

How Findable helps

Findable extracts every brand mention from every AI answer in your category, normalizes them, and tracks them as competitors regardless of whether you flagged them. We compare visibility, prompt ownership, sources, and recommendation overlap so you can see the real AI-search competitive set.

From AI answers to decisions

Competitor work in AI search is continuous, not quarterly.

  1. 1
    Detect competitors
Extract every brand AI mentions in your category — not just the ones you listed.
  2. 2
    Measure overlap
Quantify how often you’re recommended together or instead of each other.
  3. 3
    Identify winners
See which competitor wins which prompt, and why.
  4. 4
    Prioritize action
Focus on the gaps with the highest buying-intent prompts.

Methodology

Competitor brands are detected from AI answers, deduplicated against aliases, and ranked by mention share across prompts and engines. Source overlap and recommendation overlap surface why each competitor wins specific prompts.

Competitor signals are built by joining co-occurrence in AI answers, shared citations, overlapping prompts, and category embeddings across all supported AI systems, industries, and entity records.

Examples of competitor analysis

Illustrative scenarios that show how AI engines surface competitors. Educational examples only.

Retail
  • AI assistants may list Nike, Adidas, and a regional retailer side-by-side when asked for the best running shoes.
Consumer brands
  • Perplexity may pair a fashion brand with peers like Everlane or Reformation when buyers ask for sustainable options.
Healthcare SaaS
  • ChatGPT and Gemini may co-mention an EHR vendor with Epic, Athenahealth, or Cerner.

How AI engines evaluate competitors

AI engines build a working sense of who competes with whom from co-occurrence patterns inside their training and retrieval data.

  • Co-mentions
How often the brand and a competitor appear together in the same answer.
  • Recommendation overlap
How often the same competitor is recommended on the same buyer questions.
  • Citation overlap
How often shared sources are cited for both.
  • Category association
Whether the brand and competitor are tied to the same category.
  • Intent similarity
Whether they answer the same type of buyer intent.
  • Entity confidence
How distinctly each entity is understood relative to the other.

Findable surfaces every competitor pattern across supported AI engines so teams see the real competitive set.
